Double eyelid surgery

It is said that a first impression of a person is determined in just a few seconds. Among other body features of a person, the most important part would be the eyes. Many people visit the plastic surgery clinic and ask about eyes.

And frankly, women undergo surgeries on the eyes the most. When having double eyelids, they look brighter and give a feeling of intimate and open-minded impressions. But although performing a double eyelid surgery is common in Korea, the surgical technique itself is not simple or easy at all.

Although many patients think it is just a simple surgery, the surgeon who performs this surgery requires abundant knowledge of anatomy, extreme carefulness, and excellent sense of understanding of the facial beauty because plastic surgery on eyes requires to consider the size of eyes, the expression of the eyes, Mongolian folds, power of the eye muscle, height of the nose, size of the face, skin condition and so on.

Uniformly created double eyelids without aesthetic point of view can make them look unnatural and result in disastrous outcomes. Therefore, all plastic surgeons must be responsible for their surgical procedures.

Recently, many people prefer a natural looking double eyelid to a large double eyelid. So the methods of operation keep developing in the manner of making more natural and refined images of your eyes.

The restoring/reverse surgery of epicanthal (mongolian) folds

2014. 2. 11. 15:48

The restoring/reverse surgery of Epicanthal (Mongolian) folds (reconstruction of the inner corner of Asian eyes)

After one takes epicanthoplasty with the removal of the Mongolian fold, the eyes might look awkward than before, or one may want to go back to the previous look when he/she had a scar. When the eyes look severe, it is actually because of the complication caused by poor surgical experience and techniques.

When a scar is largely remained, it is mostly caused by the surgical line. In cases like these, the removal of the Mongolian fold was not done effectively and caused only a negative change on the eyes.

When one wants to undergo the restoring surgery, it must be understood that it cannot be recovered like before completely, and it may not give you the best results. If you would like the restore your Mongolian folds, it would be better to improve them properly by the Magic epicanthoplasty with restoring damaged structure of the inner corner of your eyes. Then, this can produce desirable results with natural eye appearance.

Simple restoration of the Mongolian fold make the inner corner of the eyes look as if closed. In fact, many of the patients who have undertaken the restoring method are undertaking the epicanthoplasty again.

The aim of this surgery is to give improvement and recover the structure of the inner corner of the eyes, and improve a previously remaining scar.

4 monthes after magic epicanthoplasty and non incisional double eyelid surgery.

Blue arrow: mongolian fold Red arrow: loosened double eyelid line

This patient had outline type of double eyelid surgery without having her mongolian fold removed by epicanthoplasty.

In this case, the tention of mongolian fold makes the double eyelid line at inner eye weaker and loosen.

This problem can be solved fundamentally by adequately resolving vertical tention of mongolian fold through epicanthoplasty.

Without epicanthoplasty, patients can obtain so called the 'sausage eyes'.

As you can see from the picture above, you can get brighter and perfect double eyelid line through non incisional double eyelid surgery after magic eoicanthoplasty, which alters your mongolian fold suitable for outline.

After the surgery the inner part of her eyes have brighter eyeline and gives better impression.

Most asians have moderate mongolain fold, therfore epicanthoplasty is necessary to obtain stable and perfect out line type of double eyelid.

Epicanthoplasty's purpose is not only to enlarge the eyes horizontally but also to support and complete double eyelid surgery.

Strictly speaking, epicanthoplasty and double eyelid surgery are inseparable, so it can be said it's basically one unitied operation.

At Teuim Plastic Surgery Clinc, we proceed structural double eyelid surgery which is an organic and complex combine of magic epicanthoplasty and double eyelid surgery and express high quality in-out/outline double eyelid.

for natural and stable outline type double eyelid, adequate epicanthoplasty and designed double eyelid line is medicaly essential.

parallel type double eyelid --double eyelid surgery including ptosis correction, eyelid fat graft, magic epicanthoplasty

parallel type double eyelid --double eyelid surgery including ptosis correction, eyelid fat graft, magic epicanthoplasty

Parallel double eyelid line is a form of double eyelid that the lines start apart from inner corner of the eyes and the width of the lines remains constant to the outer corner. This type of double eye lid line is shown among Caucasians, who have high forehead and depressed orbital structure compared to her nose, and have no Mongolian fold.

For Asians to make proper out folder(parallel) double eyelid, epicanthoplasty is necessary.

Asians have different orbital structure therefore; out folder line may seem awkward even with epicanthoplasty if she doesn’t have skeletal structure close to Caucasians.

When double eyelid surgery is performed to make large parallel double eyelid without epicanthoplasty , most likely to show severe swelling prolonged and eventually become awkward and strained eyes.
Above is a case, is patient who underwent Magic epicanthoplasty and incision double eyelid surgery to form structurally stable parallel line double eyelid.

There may be limits to your eyes to make out folder double eyelid if you are Asian so contemplate consultation and understanding is needed before the surgery.

Non-Incisional Double eyelid Surgery with Ptosis Correction - VividEye

2013. 2. 18. 13:31

Non-Incisional Double eyelid Surgery with Ptosis Correction - VividEye

Non-Incisional Double eyelid Surgery with Ptosis Correction - VividEye surgery

(A new paradigm for ptosis correction, VividEye surgery)

1.What is blepharoptosis correction(corrective eyelid surgery)?

A recent study has revealed that nearly 68% of Korean women lack the double-eyelid feature, along with possessing the smallest eyes among all ethnic groups worldwide. Simply explained, the ptosis correction procedure produces an aesthetically clear improvement in eye shape and size.

Medically speaking, a blepharoptosis correction can be applied to strengthen the levator muscles required to increase the vertical exposure amount of the eye and visual clarity. However, the medical terminology ‘blepharoptosis’ is used more specifically to treat those who experience moderate to severe conditions involving actual eye functionality and performance.

The term ‘corrective eyelid surgery’ is more commonly used among those of Asian ethnicity seeking cosmetic improvements for brighter looking eyes. It is a relatively common occurrence in the Asian population to see cases where a patient’s upper eyelash or eyeline covers about 2-3mm of the upper corneal margin due to slight ptosis.

For those who lack strength in their eyes, conventional double eyelid surgery alone is no longer adequate in increasing the amount of its exposure, shape and size. Until now, undergoing ptosis correction to reinforce the function of the levator muscle, in conjunction with incisional double eyelid surgery, has produced the greatest possible cosmetic result.

Example)Magic epicanthoplasty with incisional ptosis correction surgery

But while incisional surgery was the only solution available in the past, the introduction of non-incisional ptosis correction (2010) will begin a new era of minimal-invasive procedures with no scarring and quick recovery time.

Example) Magic epicanthoplasty with VividEye surgery

2.What is non-incisional ptosis correction?

VividEye surgery - Functional and structural non-incisional double eyelid surgery with ptosis correction

This new ptosis correction procedure was introduced in 2010, and just like its name, is performed without using any incisions.

Teuim Plastic Surgery Clinic has developed its own method to supplement its double-eyelid surgery with the non-incisional ptosis correction procedure VividEye, which has been especially tuned for Asians or other similar ethnic groups to deliver the most aesthetically pleasing results.

VividEye, non-incisional double eyelid surgery with ptosis correction, bases its procedure with special consideration for the eye shape and characteristics unique to Korean or other ethnic groups similar to Korean individuals (Asians) for the following reasons:

1. Caucasion individuals have a natural double eyelid feature because part of their levator muscle is connected to a piece of skin underneath the upper eyelid. Korean people, however, have several characteristics that prevent the formation of a double eyelid crease; the orbicularis muscle behind the upper eyelid skin is too thick, the orbital fat sags too low, or mostly importantly, there is too much tension in their epicanthal (Mongolian) folds.

2. The orbicularis muscle surrounding the eye serves an important function of allowing individuals to close their eyelids. Korean people(Asians) have more prominently developed orbicularis muscles, and have particularly thick fibrous bands in the inner corners of their eyes, creating the Mongolian folds. These folds make it difficult for eyes to open completely and also prevents the formation of double eyelid creases. Furthermore, while double eyelid creases lie along a horizontal vector of the eye, they are counteracted by the vertical tension created by Mongolian folds, causing surgically created double eyelid creases to unravel. So, Asian people cannot be subject to the same methods used on the Caucasian people.

Futhermore, the majority of south Asian people are considered as Southern Mongoloids with weak tension in their orbicularis muscles, but Korean and chinese people are catergorized as Northern Mongoloid with strong tension in their orbicularis muscles and epicanthal fold.

Asian people cannot be subject to the same surgical methods, because they would experience inconsistent results.

Taking into consideration the structural differences between Asian and other people, the Teium Plastic Surgery Clinic has modified the conventional method and developed VividEye to ensure the best possible results for each individual undergoing the procedure.

Who is eligible for VividEye?

1. Those who are eligible for non-incisional double eyelid surgery, but also suffer from mild ptosis.

In the past, all ptosis corrections have required the use of incisions, but VividEye provides both non-incisional double eyelid formation and non-incisional ptosis corrections.

2. Those who have natural double eye lids but drowsy looking eyes.

3. Those who have already undergone double eyelid surgery but wish to increase the vertical size of their eyes

4. Those who want minimal recovery time and a quick return to their normal routines avoiding incision method (The orbital fat was removed via stab incision)

5. Males who wish to increase the vertical size or exposure of their eyes without having heavily defined double eyelid creases.

6. Those who are unsatisfied with a previous incisional ptosis correction.

7. Those who do not want procedural scars, want bigger eyes, minimal or small double eyelids

8. Patient suffered from a severe degree of ptosis.

A Magic epicanthoplasty with VividEye can correct these cases.

9. For making out-fold type double eyelid, vivid eye surgery is helpful in some cases.

Things you should know

1. In order to avoid complications or unnecessary procedures, we recommend you to first come in and consult with us or send us photos if you are considering or indicated to VividEye.

2. Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes for three to four weeks due to the chance of loosening buried stitches.

3. Those who have undergone vision or laser eye corrective surgery should wait for about three months before electing to have VividEye.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Am I eligible for VividEye if I suffer from a severe case of ptosis?

Severe cases of ptosis can be due to congenital reasons or levator dehiscence and can lead to unsatisfactory results from VividEye. This could be different the case of Muller type ptosis, no matter how severe. In any event, we recommend that you come in for a face to face consultation if you are considering VividEye.

2. Is it as simple as non-incisional double eyelid surgery?

VividEye is similar, but requires more surgery time as it is a bit more involved. Recovery time however, is similar to conventional non-incisional double eyelid surgery.

3. Will VividEye allow me to choose the height of the double eyelid crease?

Yes, you can choose where you wish to have your double eyelid crease to be located.

4. How much recovery time will I need after VividEye?

When undergoing incisional ptosis correction, it takes about two weeks for major surgical swelling to subside. However, you should expect to recover from major swelling in just a week after VividEye.

5. Do I need to worry about my double eyelid crease unraveling or becoming loose after surgery?

Even incisional double eyelid surgery with ptosis corrections carry some risk of becoming loose or unraveled after surgery, and VividEye has a similar potential. However, corrective or revisional surgeries in those cases are much easier and simpler for VividEye.

6. I am a male who is not interested in having the double eyelid crease, and do not want it to be obvious that I have had surgery. What can VividEye do for me?

One of the great advantages of VividEye is that it does not have strict requirements for males. Although VividEye cannot avoid the double eyelid crease completely, it can be minimized to be barely visible.

7. I have had incisional double eyelid surgery with ptosis correction in the past, but I am unsatisfied with the results. Instead of revisional surgery, should I just elect for VividEye?

In the absence of any major scarring or adhesions, we recommend that you come in for a consultation so that we can see what VividEye can do for you.

What is epicanthoplasty (removal of Mongolian folds)?

2012. 10. 4. 12:47

1.What is epicanthoplasty (removal of Mongolian folds)?

A Mongolian fold, which is a physical characteristic of the Northeast Asian Mongoloid races, is the thick skin that droops down, connecting the upper eyelid with the lower eyelid. Epicanthoplasty is the name of the operation that removes Mongolian folds that cover the inner corner of your eyes, so that your eyes look more opened and become more refined and bigger.

For those who have a wide distance between eyes or has small eyes, or looks severe because of inclination of the inner corner of your eyes by a Mongolian fold, then epicanthoplasty is necessary.

When it is performed with a double eyelid surgery at the same time, the actual horizontal length of eyes can be extended and the interepicanthal distance will also be narrowed. After all, attractive and refined double eyelids will be created by improvement of the Mongolian folds.

2.What is Magic epicanthoplasty?

Magic epicanthoplasty(Kwon’ method) is a unique method of surgery in removing Mongolian folds, and is the surgery to be first founded by Teuim plastic surgery in 2004.

Unlike conventional methods, Magic epicanthoplasty primarily releases the tension band and leads to the redistribution of the eyelid skin naturally without the removal of the skin while maintaining the original anatomical relationships.

Therefore, it is a completely new technique first made by Dr. Bongsik Kwon. This method is called the Magic epicanthoplasty. With good reports and reputations by people who have already undertaken this, it is becoming a term that is commonly used in Korea and in many other countries.

Also, it is even used among many other surgeons as a term for their operation methods of simulative epicanthoplasties. To perform Magic epicanthoplasty, a surgeon needs plentiful experiences and extreme carefulness to create optimal results. Teuim plastic surgery have more than 5000 cases of magic epicanthoplasty alone or combined double eyelid surgeries.

Actual shape of the canthal angles of the eyes.

2012. 10. 4. 12:27

Inner area of Asian eyes is covered by Mongolian folds (For Asians, Mongolian folds start from the Inner corner of the eyes). The epicanthal angles(corners) can be exposed to some extent only by epicanthoplasty. The shapes of the hidden epicanthal angle are quite various and different, but generally, Asian eyes’ angles are rounder and shorter than those of the Caucasians.

Example) Round and curved shape of epicanthal angle

Example) Structural double eyelid surgeries combined with Magic epicanthoplasty in case of the long and sharp epicanthal angle

what is Mongolian fold (epicanthal fold) ?

2012. 10. 4. 11:37

what is Mongolian folds? ( = Epicanthus, Epicanthal fold, Epicanthic fold)

Examples) Very severe types of Mongolian folds

A vertical fold of skin over the angle of the inner canthus of the eye. It may be slight or marked, covering the canthus and the caruncle. Also called epicanthus, epicanthal fold, epicanthic fold.

Epicanthic folds may be seen in young children of any ethnicity before the bridge of the nose begins to elevate. They may persist where birth is pre-term.

A Mongolian fold is a typical characteristic among North American Indian and Northeast Mongolian races. It often refers to a type of fold where the skin hangs down from the epicanthal region, which passes through the corner of your eyes and finally covers the inner canthus of your eye. Statistics show that most Koreans have Mongolian folds starting from the canthal area, covering the corner of the eyes in various ways. This can create a small and stuffy look of the eye and can worsen one’s impression. The weaker the Mongolian fold, the more refined your eyes’ impressions become. In some ethnicities, the presence of an epicanthic fold is associated with a less prominent upper eyelid crease, commonly termed "single eyelids" as opposed to "double eyelids". The two features are distinct, a person may have both epicanthic fold and upper eyelid crease, one or neither.

If there is no Mongolian fold in one’s eyes, it can be said that he or she has more dominant genes of other races than those of the North Mongolian race. It is a hereditary trait in Asian people and is of no clinical significance.
